Designer tips to make small rooms look bigger

Is one of your rooms short of a couple of square meters? Do not despair! Combine a couple of the below designer tricks and you will be smiling at the difference they really make!

Very light or very dark colours

Any shade of colour in between tends to make a room look smaller. A mixture of white and bright colours creates contrast. This means that anyone will have the sensation that the room looks larger than it really is.

Mirrors

Most probably this is the most known trick to make spaces look larger. Not only should you include mirrors but the bigger the mirror, the better it is and if there is a source of natural light, placing the mirror opposite this source will work wonders.

Rugs

When choosing rugs for your small room, opt for small patterns or plain colours to expand the size of the room. This trick helps make the room look complete but also creates the illusion of a bigger room.

Floor-to-ceiling curtains which match the colour of your wall

Long curtains give the illusion that the ceiling of the room is actually higher than it really is. For added effect, match the colour of your curtains to the colour of the wall or opt for sheers if possible.

Lighting

Rather than opting for one single source of light by going or a large ceiling lamp, consider strategically placing smaller lamps around the room. This is a real game changer especially if the room doesn’t enjoy much natural light.

See-through furniture

No matter how large or small your property is, storage is a problem everyone seems to have to deal with. Think before you purchase and buy your items in a clever way. Floating shelves, poufs and beds with storage space, decorative baskets doubling as containers for throw overs, toys, magazines, remote controls etc.

Don’t overdo it with decorations

Allow for some blank and empty spaces instead of occupying every surface possible. This will make the room look airier and less cluttered.

Show those legs

Not yours! The furniture’s 😉 Whether you are choosing chairs, beds or a chest of drawers, opt for items with exposed legs. Why? Because it will give you the impression that the room has more space than it actually has.

Striped Flooring

Yes! Striped flooring also creates the illusion that the floor and therefore also the room is bigger. If you think it is too extreme as an idea or that you will get bored of it, try placing a striped carpet instead, which covers most of the floor.
