Tiles Do’s and Don’ts

Tiles are by far the most common type of material used for flooring and other areas of the house such as bathrooms and shower room walls etc… However, this doesn’t mean that it is easy not to get it wrong even when choosing your tiles. For this reason, we thought you might find these do’s and don’ts helpful.

Do

Very light or very dark colours

The smaller the grout lines, the better. When you look at the surface you have tiled, you want the tiles to stand out and not the grouting. Let’s say the grouting is just a necessary evil and the less it shows the better. Not to mention how difficult it is too clean.

Coordinate Grout Colours

For the same reason as we just mentioned above, you don’t want the grout staring back at you when you look at your tiled surfaces. In order to minimize this, make sure you use a colour of grouting which is as close to the colour of the tiles you have chosen as possible. In this way they blend in better and provide a more uniform look.

Choose Simple & Timeless Designs

When you are choosing your tiles, you have to bear in mind that you will have these for a very long time. Changing tiles means a lot of work and also a big expense. For this reason, it would be best to try and opt for a design which is neutral and timeless not to run the risk of getting bored of it quickly..

Choose Something Unique for Small Spaces

In contrast to what we have just mentioned above, do feel free to get creative when choosing tiles for small areas such as the laundry room or the en-suite. The right choice of tiles will add character to the that room and break the monotony of having the same tiles all over the house.

Pay Attention to Texture

Choosing the right texture for your lifestyle is essential. Don’t choose glossy tiles which mark easily unless you are ready to commit to cleaning them all the time. Pay attention even to the areas you are choosing the tiles for. Living rooms and kitchens tend to receive the worst abuse so choose wisely for these areas.

Get Creative with Layouts

This might come in especially handy if you are choosing the same or very similar tiles for your flooring throughout the property. Simply by changing the layout of how the tiles are laid will make a great difference and also break the monotony of the design.

Don’t

Use Contrasting Grouting

Doing so will make every onlooker’s attention be drawn to the grouting and not the tiles. Do you really want that? We doubt it!

Use the Same Tiles all Over

As already mentioned, different areas of the house see different amounts of traffic. We suggest you use matte tiles for such areas not only because they mark less easily but also because they are less prone to scratches. You might get away with using a more delicate typ of tile for the bedrooms.

Use polished tiles in Showers or Bathrooms

Specific spaces require tiles with different characteristics. The first rule in tiles is, for example, not choosing polished tiles for bathroom and shower room flooring. Although the reason for this might be quite obvious, you might be templated to overlook certain details. Polished tiles are slippery, so you are not going to be safe using them in such areas.
